The English Laundry Story

English Laundry was founded by designer Christopher Wicks, who grew up in Manchester, England during the 1960s sketching shirts, shoes, and guitars from an early age. At 22, Wicks began his formal career designing men’s dress shirts for one of England’s largest gentlemen’s shirt manufacturers.

Drawing on that professional foundation, Wicks launched English Laundry in 2010 as a menswear label rooted in the mod aesthetics and rock culture of 1960s and 70s Britain. The brand’s signature hand-sewn, individually laundered shirts quickly earned a devoted following across the United States.

Over the following years, English Laundry expanded well beyond shirting into denim, tailored trousers, outerwear, footwear, accessories, and fragrance. Today it is distributed across North America and internationally, recognized as a music-driven global lifestyle brand for the confident, style-conscious man.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions shoppers ask most — sizing, fabrics, care, and what makes English Laundry different.

What makes English Laundry shirts special?

Each shirt is hand-sewn and individually laundered for fit, with signature details like contrast trims, embroidered collar accents, and mother-of-pearl buttons that set them apart from standard dress shirts.

Do English Laundry pants run true to size?

The fit is generally true to size, though the slim and straight-leg cuts are tailored closer to the body. Checking the specific fit guide for each pant style is recommended before ordering.

Are the jeans and pants stretch fabric?

Many styles feature four-way stretch construction — including the popular 365 pant line — giving them a comfortable, flexible fit suitable for long days without sacrificing a sharp silhouette.

Where is English Laundry clothing made?

The brand was founded in Manchester, England. Garments are produced through international manufacturing partnerships, with design direction remaining rooted in British heritage aesthetics.

How should I care for English Laundry shirts?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low, or hang to dry for best results. For jacquard and embroidered styles, a low-heat iron and careful handling preserve the detailing.

What occasions are these clothes suited for?

The range spans the full spectrum — crisp dress shirts for business and formal events, sport shirts and chinos for smart-casual outings, and relaxed denim and shorts for weekends.

Grabbed a sport shirt on a whim and it’s become my most-worn piece this season. The print is bold without being over the top — exactly the kind of statement piece my wardrobe needed.

Bought two dress shirts and a pair of stretch chinos — the quality is genuinely impressive for the price. The contrast cuff detail on the shirts gets compliments every single time I wear them.

The 365 pants are the most comfortable work trousers I’ve owned. They move like joggers but look like proper tailored slacks. I’ve already ordered two more pairs in different colors.
